The Real New York Central 174479

Built in 1945 by Despatch Shops Inc., the real NYC 174479 was part of a NYC numbered set of cars ranging from 174000-174999. These 40'6" steel boxcars had a capacity of 55 tons and were equipped with 6' doors.  They served with NYC reporting marks from 1945-1983.

174479 was assigned to NYC fast freight LCL (Less than Car Load) Pacemaker service which began in 1946. Information stenciled on these red and gray cars  cars did not include capacity or dimensional data because the cars were not intended to be interchanged with other railroads.

Originally built with a 100000 lbs capacity, the Pacemaker boxcars were downgraded to 50000 lbs.
